Activities:
- Go, Slow, Whoa - We took We Can’s Go, Slow, Whoa activity and turned it into a relay race! The kids are divided into two teams, each with a basket of foods that range in health (some are Go-the healthiest, others Slow-the in between healthy and others are Whoa-the least healthy). Each team must race to sort their basket of foods into the Go, Slow, or Whoa bins. The team that sorts their foods the fastest with the most correct wins. We were able to educate the kids on which foods they can eat anytime they are hungry and which foods are really just a special treat using fun and exercise. (Resources: We Can! http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/obesity/wecan/).
- Eat the Rainbow - This activity allowed each camper to think beyond the common fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, apples, and oranges and think of colorful fruits and vegetables that broaden their palate and teach them about food variety. After teaching them the reasons to eat fruits and vegetables and reviewing the many different forms they come in, the kids colored their new fruits and vegetables in an outline of a rainbow. During this game the children are split up into teams and answer our healthy food questions while having fun!
- Pin the Food on the Body- Using a poster of a man and a basket of foods with their main vitamin printed underneath, kids randomly choose a food and pin it to the body part that the vitamin is associated with. This allows them to learn what vitamins and minerals make the body function as well as the reasons we eat healthy foods.
