Public Policy

Welcome to the Maryland Academy state public policy page! The Maryland Academy's State Policy Representative (SPR) is your point person in helping to establish and apply the Maryland Academy's legislative positions in Annapolis. Public policy work is one of our most effective tools to enhance our public image, defend our scope of practice and advance the cause of good nutrition in Maryland. The State Policy Representative builds relationships with the 47 state senators and 141 delegates from the House of Delegates coming from 47 state districts in Maryland.

Maryland Academy's state public policy positions are formed by our Public Policy Panel which includes:

President

State Regulatory Specialist

President-Elect

State Policy Representative

Public Policy Coordinator

Reimbursement Representative

Affiliate Delegate to the Academy House of Delegates

and is guided by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' public policy team in the Washington, D.C. office. We also receive effective counsel from our lobbyist. More importantly, our positions are strongly influenced by you, the member. The old adage that two heads are better than one is never truer than in the area of public policy. If you have an idea, a concern, or want to discuss generalities, we need to hear from you. As Lincoln said, “Those who choose not to participate in democracy are doomed to be controlled by those who do.” State nutrition bills can be found using the Congressional Quarterly (CQ) State Track System on the ADA website (http://www.eatright.org/advocacy/).

You are invited to join Maryland Academy members for our annual Legislative Day in Annapolis!

By meeting with key state legislators in a time of historical changes in health care, we make an influence on policy. State legislators now know that registered dietitians are, and ought to be, a critical part of any discussions on the changing face of health care. In fact, state legislators are now realizing that Maryland citizens hold the key to their own health care —and it’s their fork.

If you have any questions on MDA's state public policy positions, or would like to get more involved, please contact MDA’s SPR Barbara Hoffstein or check out our Public Policy FAQ page!
