Session Summary
There is increasing awareness among nutrition researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and consumers that the one-size-fits-all, population-based approach to nutritional guidance is inefficient and sometimes ineffective. Research in the field of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics has provided important new insights into the role of human genetic variation in modifying the response to nutrients and food bioactives. This session will review the scientific evidence, explain the benefits and limitations of genetic testing and describe criteria that can be used to determine the clinical validity and utility of consumer genetic tests for personalized nutrition.

Presenter:
Ahmed El-Sohemy, PhD - Professor and Canada Research Chair in Nutrigenomics - University of Toronto Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy is a Professor at the University of Toronto and holds a Canada Research Chair in Nutrigenomics. The goal of his research is to elucidate the genetic basis for variability in nutrient response on health and performance. Dr. El-Sohemy has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles and has given over 200 invited talks around the world. He is on the editorial board of 10 scientific and medical journals (eg AJCN, J. Nutr. Biochem.) and served as an expert reviewer for more than 30 other journals and 12 granting agencies. Dr. El-Sohemy has served on Health Canada’s Scientific Advisory Board and several international expert advisory panels. In 2014, he was awarded the Centrum Foundation New Scientist Award for Outstanding Research by the Canadian Nutrition Society. In 2016, he was awarded the Mark Bieber Professional Award by the American College of Nutrition. He is the founder of Nutrigenomix Inc. and chairs the company’s International Science Advisory Board.
