Position Description

At the Maryland Food Bank (MFB), we believe that no one should be hungry. We work every day to provide nutritious food to 650,000 food-insecure Marylanders and eliminate the root causes of hunger in our state. We do this by working in partnership with more than 1,150 food assistance sites (food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters) across Maryland.
The Director, Nutrition Programs plays a key role in improving the nutritional quality of the food we distribute and deploying effective client-centered educational programming. S/he is the food bank’s internal expert on nutrition and health and should be a recognized expert on nutrition, ideally in the anti-hunger arena. S/he is responsible for leading the implementation of MFB’s first formal nutrition policy and an on-site garden education program. S/he brings proven expertise in outreach to at-risk and low-income populations.
Responsibilities for the Director, Nutrition Programs include:
• Leading and/or collaborating with others to advance the sourcing and distribution of nutritious food
• Improving outcomes for the people we serve by offering nutrition education and raising awareness
• Leading and/or collaborating on projects and partnerships that focus on ‘food as medicine’ or an increased emphasis on the nutritional quality of food distributed
• Developing, implementing, and evaluating MFB’s health, nutrition, and education programs, including, but not limited to:
o Nutrition Education
o Garden Education Program
o Food Safety instruction for partners (ServSafe for Managers)
• Serving as the internal expert on nutrition, food quality, and food safety
• Developing and managing program budgets, record keeping and reporting
• Monitoring and assessing program quality and effectiveness
• Collaborating with:
o Regional Directors, Partner Services, and Operations to ensure/support quality, consistency, and strategy in food distribution efforts
o Food Sourcing and Operations for equipment and supply purchases
o FoodWorks — MFB’s culinary training program — for community education and involvement, as well as external partnerships
o External Affairs to promote program outcomes, raise funds, and communicate with donors
• Communicating and integrating programs across MFB departments and staff
• Acting as a consultant to partner agencies and programs to ensure nutritional soundness
• Identifying and implementing age and population appropriate curricula for programs
• Developing educational and promotional materials
• Preparing reports, analyses, and updates for executive leadership, funders, and others as needed
• All other duties assigned by management

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, nutritional sciences, public health, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
• Minimum five years’ experience in a management capacity in a food and nutrition department
• Experience in community health and/or food banking desired

Desired Qualifications

• Current and valid registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration preferred
• Thorough knowledge of food products and service, operations, staffing, handling, storage, and regulatory requirements required
• Knowledge of nutrition and therapeutic diets preferred
• Demonstrated ability in both written and verbal communication and public speaking.
• Ability to effectively communicate with individuals of diverse socio-economic and educational backgrounds
• Ability to work effectively in an office, commercial kitchen, and a working warehouse
• Computer literacy
• Ability to think creatively and strategically as part of a team of senior managers
• Valid driver’s license
