Annual Scholarships will open September 15 – January 15

The Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (MAND Foundation) is the charitable branch of the Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We are a 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds to provide scholarships for MAND members.

The number of award winners in each window is determined by the funds available.

Jane Hartman Award

Pursuing an Undergraduate Degree in Dietetics or a Dietetic Internship Applicants: open to undergraduate dietetics students or graduate students/interns in Supervised Experiential Learning (SEL) dietetic programs.

Jane Hartman

•Dietitian leader at both the national and state level

•Twice President of Maryland Dietetic Association (1947-1948 and 1970-1971)

•She created classes to develop the expertise of food service managers throughout Maryland.

•At the national level, Jane Hartman served on the American Dietetic Association and in the House of Delegates.

•Received the ADA Medallion Award at the ADA annual Meeting in New Orleans 1985.

Dr. E.V. McCollum

Returning Graduate Student Award Applicants: Open to a returning graduate student, currently an RD/RDN or NDTR.

Dr. Elmer Verner McCollum (1879–1967), the pioneering nutrition scientist and longtime Johns Hopkins professor.

•Discovered the first vitamin, named A, in 1913.

•Helped to discover vitamin B and vitamin D.

•The effect of trace elements in the diet.

•Development of the ketogenic diet for epilepsy in the 1930s-1940s.

•In 1952, TIME magazine called him Dr. Vitamin and noted that he "has done more than any other man to put vitamins back in the nation's daily diet.“

Helen D. Mullan

Continuing Education Award

Applicants: open to RD/RDNs, NDTRs, dietetic interns/graduate students in supervised experiential learning (SEL) programs, undergraduate dietetics students.

Helen D. Mullan, MBA, RD, LD, was a member of the Academy for over 40 years. She spent the majority of her career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Mullan was also an active volunteer, serving as the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) president in 1994-1995, and giving many years of service, including two terms as president, to the Maryland Dietetic Association (MDA), which honored her with the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award in 1999.
