"How will healthcare change in Maryland because of the new administration?" "Learn what the effects the new administration in Washington is going to have here in Maryland."

  • Would you like to help make sure your license continues to keep unqualified people from practicing MNT?
  • Would you like to change dietitians’ image as the “food police?”
  • Would you like to build a strong network that can help you get appropriately reimbursed for what you do?
  • Would you like to know how your MAND Lobbyist is working for you 24/7?

Come to Annapolis and make an impact for your profession!
Your legislators often feel that they “get no respect” because most people think all the action takes place on Capitol Hill.  They don’t have any idea what you do, but do you know what they do?  These legislators make many decisions about our ability to practice in the state and nutrition regulations in schools and restaurants.  Who do you want them to learn about nutrition from?  Start the dialog!

On Wednesday, February 21, 2018 come together with your peers in Annapolis and go in a group to see individual legislators, tell them what you do, and exchange ideas about how you can help each other get good laws passed and help our mutual constituents get healthier.  As you follow up with your legislators afterward, you can soon be on a first-name basis and easily have their ear when you have concerns and requests.

Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
State Legislative Interactive Workshop 2017
Recap & Thank You

Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (MAND) State Legislative Interactive Workshop (SLIW) 2017, is where Licensed Registered Dietitian/Nutritionists working and/or living in Maryland come together in Annapolis, Maryland to visit their legislators as an annual CPEU event!

This past February 8, 2017, in an unseasonably warm day of over 60 degrees, the hard work and long hours from our 75 MAND members in attendance came together as one-RD’s, DTR’s, dietetic  students and interns alike attended over 40 legislative appointments with their Maryland state senators and delegates, participated in a hearing in either the Senate or House of Delegate building, educated our state legislators on bills concerning the future of dietetics and nutrition, and executed the annual Apple Crunch Challenge-which involves both the legislator and attendee taking a bite into an apple to symbolize a promise to make the good health of Maryland citizens a high priority as viewed on our twitter feed #MANDSLIW.

Last but not least, Dietetic Intern, Ben Sizemore won the event prize at the end of the day, a $15.00 Fandango Movie Ticket Gift Card!

Beyond the importance of the event itself, most, if not all, attendees said it was a wonderful experience and would likely return again! Our wonderful speakers including Delegate Marc Korman of District 15, MAND President Livleen Gill, State Regulatory Specialist (SRS) Arnetta Fletcher, Reimbursement Representative (RR) Anna Bondy, and our two Lobbyists Dan Shattuck and Barbara Brocato assisted in providing our attendees an overview on how to approach legislators, what we should expect, how to effectively lobby, and insight into the concerns and advantages of current political climates.

A recap of the day from University of Maryland Dietetic Internship in a blog can be viewed at http://umdieteticinternship.blogspot.com/2017/03/mand-state-legislative-interactive.html

We would like to thank several people and also acknowledge our apple vendors who went above and beyond in helping make this event the success it was! We hope to see you again next year.  Please save the date as Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland!
